I have two servers, a >100TB rack-mounted Supermicro archive that doesn’t get fired up often, and an Intel NUC that runs 24/7 but only draws 5W at idle. The NUC with its mere 4TB SSD is only for content I’m actively watching which gets deleted immediately afterwards. Running just the Supermicro made more sense when I had a terrible internet connection and had to wait for everything but I moved to an area with 1Gb+ connectivity a few years ago and subsequently needed to save on energy costs.

I feel like the real question you want to ask yourself is, “how likely is it that this particular content will still be available on Usenet/torrents in a few years?” Some stuff is much more niche and rare while other movies/shows each have over a dozen redundant releases, at least a few of which will more or less always be available somewhere. To put things in perspective, it also helps to do an analysis of how much you’re spending each month in order to avoid what you would be paying in streaming and licensing costs, including hardware, power, and connectivity. If that ratio gets too high then it’s time to scale back.

You may also want to look into NZBget (download client) and nzb360 for mobile management if you happen to be an Android user – or LunaSea either way.

That’s a good idea. Yeah, the trick I discovered in getting them off the mounting bracket without the chrome plating peeling is to grab each end of the bracket with vice grips and/or pliers (after you unscrew it from the drive) and just bend it down and away from the magnet. They usually come off in one piece that way, too.

Which pins go to the motherboard other than power/reset? Is that USB connector just passing through the keyboard and mouse signals?

Maybe, but power consumption can get steep with some server boards/chassis which might tip the balance over time.

This is why Spotify is the only streaming service I have. Is there a server with >1TB of lossless audio in my basement? Sure, allegedly. Do I want to organize it and build playlists in Plexamp until my fingers bleed? Fuck no, I’d much rather pay $5/mo for a student subscription and tap a few buttons on my phone. Even though as a musician myself it’s nice to know the artists are getting a little kickback, it’s not so much that I’m paying for the music as I am paying for the software.

And it’s fine if that’s the case. It’s not like I actually needed another reason to finally start ditching Windows for good but this might just be the straw that broke the camel’s back. I’m just a lazy Windows sysadmin who uses what he knows, but not if it doesn’t make sense for the application.

I edited the post to mention that this is Windows 10, but I’m not at all against installing Arch instead if it improves performance.

Okay then there’s no reason why a hyperthreaded hexacore i7-10710U should struggle unless, like you said, there’s a misconfiguration. That makes me feel better because I’m hemorrhaging cash at the moment.
