Great! Glad it worked out for you. The second time I deployed lemmy on a production machine it was markedly easier because I have a known working compose and lemmy.hjson file so thats one part. I think the first install/config took me days of tinkering.

At the moment, I cant see if I‘ll havre the time to ever make a cone click install script but I‘ll think about it.

Lemmy, although in a very well working state, isnt really deploy ready. The update procedure is a mess, the documentation is less than stellar and accessibility/onboarding for wannabe admins is rough to say the least.

You can find a compose file on github and you will need to make a config file for the instance with your domain and all on it.

A one click install sure is doable but most people who are able to do this quickly are very busy or wont do it for free.

I‘m self employed in IT and host a couple services for people. Small, local business.

My experience so far is that few outside of IT understand why big tech isnt a viable option and even fewer are willing to accept that imperfection when it comes to services that have a proprietary option.

Obviously its pretty early in the game so I guess this will get better and I‘m also not complaining, just stating that peeps need more time and education on this matter.

I agree on principle but paying someone would do wonders for the state of self hosting - assuming that the people paid would foward parts to the software devs and help improve the software since they can afford to spend time with the software. Second point is that attempting self hosting only makes sense if someone is actually willing to learn and put time in.

I would not suggest the „average person“ who statistically can only install with „click through“ and extensive description and may require a hotline if things go south to selfhost anything.

Ideally, they should pay a friend or a local small business for hosting for them.

If a person is able to constructively work through bugs and make bug reports and read a lot, yes, they could attempt selfhosting imo. But they should be aware that it is going to be work and its not going to go smooth 100% of the time.

If a company makes millions (let alone billions) while all but the top 1-5% of their artists have to fight for scraps, piracy is the only good option. Dont buy from billion dollar companies at all. Support artists individually and let labels rot.

Pretty straightforward. You need to host your stuff on your own hardware, ideally. You need good backups. You obviously can pay someone to do it for you but it does add complexity. In any case, streaming services are dead men walking by this point I think.

Check out forgejo. While git is „decentralized“ it is not discoverable. Forgejo is pretty much there afaik using ap protocol.
