If you want an app for your phone, Soulseek has done me absolute wonders. Shockingly it’s on the Google play store. It requires an account, but the app automatically makes you one when you use it iirc.
I don’t have answers that haven’t already been said, but I’ll give a recommendation to Seeker as a means of downloading music outside of streaming apps. It’s just a fantastic app for torrenting entire albums from in mp3, ogg, and FLAC format. I’ve downloaded dozens of gigs of music off it so far and will likely have to grab a terabyte micro SD card for my phone.
Honestly you can get an old iPod, slap a new battery inside, and flash mod it to replace it’s hard drive with an SD card, and you have exactly what you’re looking for in a small, robust, easy to use device.
Just using it as a streaming machine.
