What are you referring to? Because in this case Steam would be getting a certain amount once for you to be able to play hundreds or thousands of games on another platform

On my (all AMD) computer it dropped the display signal as soon a there was load on the GPU when running Bazzite, so I went with Mint instead where I had to fuck around to make my wifi antenna work 🤷 Too bad because Bazzite looked awesome…

I’ve had to fuck around with my Windows saves (backed to the cloud) when installing the Linux version of Wasteland 2 and the two Pillars of Eternity games and I eventually just gave up and installed them with Proton so it would download the saves to the right place for them to work.

If you play Deadfire on multiple Linux devices you need to install with Proton compatibility otherwise cloud saves don’t work at all because Steam doesn’t back up the right folder (it uses the Windows folder name which has a lower case o in the word Of), that means that if you wipe your hard drive and rely on cloud saves then you’re fucked because Steam will have created an empty folder to backup.

And remember, as I said, the Deck installs the Windows version by default but if you have Linux on your PC then chances are cloud saves between your Deck and PC won’t work unless you force the Deck to install the Linux version of games.

Only issue you’ll probably have is if the cloud saves are for a different OS, so if you’re playing on Windows make sure it’s the Proton version of the game that’s installed on the Deck, if you’re playing a native Linux version of the game on your PC then make sure it’s the native Linux version that’s installed on the Deck (usual defaults to the Proton version).

It’s just an issue with the cloud save feature being too dumb, the path to the save folder isn’t the same on both platforms so it doesn’t sync well (although I think it does on some games).

Yep, Windows 8 had a mobile/tablet version.

I also mentioned in another comment that they could simply do the same thing as with the Deck, have it start with a handheld/controller friendly UI (hmmm where could Microsoft’s Xbox division find that?) and give the option to switch to regular old Windows to do desktop stuff. It’s not as if playing on the desktop without a mouse and keyboard attached to the Deck is a fun experience either!

Well Windows 8 phones were considered to be awesome by those who had one, it’s the lack of support from third party that killed mass adoption.

Also, if we’re looking at the past to decide what is and isn’t possible then gaming on Linux is impossible.

Let’s not pretend that using the desktop on a Deck is a wonderful experience either, Steam’s big picture mode is just a front end that improves the experience and Microsoft could do the equivalent by reusing the Xbox UI with the option to fall back to Windows 11 proper and then people could launch another launcher from there if they wanted. Heck people could launch Steam in big picture mode from their Xbox handheld if they wanted!

Their competition is the Deck and other handhelds that run full versions of Windows, there’s no reason to believe they wouldn’t give it the same kind of capacities (i.e. a real handheld PC) in which case it’s the Deck that will feel like a walled garden considering that not all games are compatible and not all launchers work on it.

I say that as a Deck owner that plays with it pretty much once a day.

Called it months ago, they’ll develop a handheld version of Windows and have their own handheld!

So yeah, private, non commercial, in the home, for content you would have otherwise been able to see for yourself in the past by the “regular” means available to you.

Which is vastly different from going on the internet and downloading a movie with your favorite torrent program when you wouldn’t have otherwise been able to see it…
