3DMVR@lemm.eeto Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Risks of self-hosting a public-facing forum?English11·12 days agoeither waymy suggestion was to find a deal that suits your needs at low end talk over trying to self host anything otherppl will be accessing from your home, you wont find good deals just googling around, or even on reddit
3DMVR@lemm.eeto Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Risks of self-hosting a public-facing forum?English11·12 days agobut thats the exact issue, the businesses with clean perfect sites tend to be the scams, while these where you need specific links off a forum like lownendtalm to even access the deal work well and are hella cheap in comparison? Racknerds also been great but way less resources, their deals also never go away if you get a link.
3DMVR@lemm.eeto Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Risks of self-hosting a public-facing forum?English11·12 days agowell, i have a lot of stuff running on it fine for the last 3 months, and lowendtalk is what I trust, I made a thread there asking about it and ppl trusted them.
You use a virtualizer panel and they provision from cogent, its pretty straightforward what you’re getting and you can stress test it or whatever? Do you only trust the major players like digital ocean, aws, etc.?
3DMVR@lemm.eeto Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Risks of self-hosting a public-facing forum?English1·13 days agoIll check them out, been curious about unlimited data transfer, does it allow torrenting done through their hosting
3DMVR@lemm.eeto Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Risks of self-hosting a public-facing forum?English11·13 days agoits just way less risky and not that expensive tho? I had the same idea as op til I realized that fit my needs and gave a lot more resources than hetzner.
3DMVR@lemm.eeto Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Risks of self-hosting a public-facing forum?English11·13 days agoits one of the more trusted ones on lowendtalk? nicer site doesnt equal better company and typically equals worse deals, a lot of the nicer looking sites on lowendtalk have had comment saying they are scams
3DMVR@lemm.eeto Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Risks of self-hosting a public-facing forum?English24·15 days agoIts so cheap to just get a vps from a littlecreekhosting deal, I checked them all on lowendtalk and its the cheapest for highest specs, you do have to comment your invoice to double ram, but its 4 core 8gb ram for 3.50 a month and 8core 16gb 7$ cogent amd epyc, and solid ssd space 140-160 idr exactly, they have multiple deals posted, the one with the prices I mention is the best one, they also had windows vps deals. Spent way too long testing hella, its not the best ping out there for me since I’m fairly far but I’m not hosting gameservers so its a non issue.
There are many other deals on lowendtalk but they are typically for way less resources or way more expensive for a lot more resources
damn near every single image on my phone fails to meet the requirements so I host my own instance lol, I tried compressing butchered the quality this is 1080p too
thats a good reason too, I make communities on the bigger ones for more visibility
depends on instance they all set hard limits of their own lemmee is 5mb which is lowaf
one with alts if you need or want them because of instanve specific rules
I use porkbun and you get cloudflare through them, not sure to what extent, porkbuns just cheaper, I like their ui, straightforward, everything you need on one screen.

3DMVR@lemm.eeto Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Hetzner announces price hike for cloud servers and bandwidth cut of up to 95%English4·2 months agoHetzners still the cheapest pay by the hour option in the US? Long term id use racknerd or littlecreekhosting, but for quick deployments that are paid by the hour on the 3rd of the month, Hetzner is great. Don’t have to whip out the credit card, it’s instant.
3DMVR@lemm.eeto Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Jellyfin is not just good... but *better* than Plex now?!English11·2 months agoRd has no issues torrenting stuff? If it isnt cached it downloads it for me faster than my internet could lol. Thats a good idea tho, but typically if I lose internet, I’ve also lost power.
3DMVR@lemm.eeto Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Jellyfin is not just good... but *better* than Plex now?!English3·2 months agoany reason to use this over real debrid + stremio?
I initially fd it up because I didnt deselect everything but the apps, but I at least thought to backitup and dload it locally beforehand so it was an easy/quick recovery
I have no idea lmao, prob a typo lol, I had streams and pleroma as well
Moved my fediverse apps friendica, lemmy, 35c. (only user is me) to one server since it was overkill having 2 barely using 8% if that if their cpu/ram. Suprisingly easy with yunohost backups, remade users and restored backup if just the apps. Updated enhance panel, switched the sites im making for family to use as a portfolio for local webdev to ols, fairly easy, was using wordpress templates wrong so I fixed that and redid the home pages, now I feel less confident with wordpress and wonder if ive always made sites wrong, think i just forgot since its been years.
I like the idea of the app, functions like inbetween reddit and discord, definitely a good idea that should be cloned and could benefit from federation like reddit, discord, twitter, etc.
