I already have the latest ‘bypass paywall’ clean installed , but I’m finding one of two things lately : either some previous bypassed sites are becoming subject to restrictions or some recently accessible sites are now restricted.
Case in point: Vox.
When I try to read any articles on the site now , I keep getting blocked by a popup that tells me to become a paid member.
The site use to take pride in being (mostly) free but now it appears to be (mostly) paid.
Is there anyway of getting around this?
thanks
IronFox with uBlock Origin works for me when I click through some articles on that site.
Just throw the website in there and you can read it free.
Nice!
Thanks.
But trying to access archive.is throws up its own roadblocks in the form of popups where you have to click the correct boxes of pictures just to proceed.
half the time they just give you the article, but half the time they do captcha.
if you complete the captcha, it always provide you with a full article, though.
How do you complete the captcha? For me it just loops; it’s to the point where not having the original link to an article is actually more annoying.
They seem to block particular IP ranges for some reason. You can tell if you’re blocked because it just keeps showing the CAPTCHA over and over again.
My home ISP is blocked but my phone isn’t, so I can access it from my computer by tethering to my phone. It’s weird and I’m not sure how to contact them and ask about it.
I just click the bicycles or whatever and then it takes me to the article, it doesn’t loop on my android, Linhx, Windows devices using edge, firefox or chrome.
if you’re having that kind of trouble, i’m really not sure where it would be from.
I think you can just add archive.md or archive.ph etc before the URL of the article, e.g. archive.ph/https://vox.com/whatever to skip that. I’ve never had to do any captchas this way

This, plus AdGuard and I can read Vox no problem
Can confirm! I also have AdGuard & BPC and I can browse around it with no trouble.
Scripts/extensions/sites to bypass paywalls can only bypass soft paywalls, where the article is still available in some cases (e.g. you can read a few articles for free, they allow search engines to index the content, etc).
More and more sites are moving towards hard paywalls which can’t be bypassed other than someone paying for the site and downloading the content that way, which is legally much more sketchy.
Some paid news sites let members create free links to share articles with non members, which is another option.
The good news is that you aren’t missing much because Vox videos and articles are a mile wide, and an inch deep.
https://github.com/everywall/ladder is selfhosted but someone hosts a public instance: https://ladder.nerdvpn.de/ username: ladder password: unpaywall
Brave
Huh?
Brave has a filter list you can enable that works great at bypassing paywalls on news websites
I use the obsidian web clipper plug-in to read paywalled content in my vault. Or, there’s one specifically built for saving recipes and it works great.
I use an extension which bundles 5 different solutions in one called PaywallHub. I hasn’t been updated for a while because it got hit by takedown notices, but the chrome extension and firefox addon repos are still available, you just have to install it a bit more manually: https://github.com/Angeloyo/PaywallHub
12ft.io usually works for me.
It’s blocked a lot of sites now though.
I’ve had good luck with https://www.removepaywall.com/
